John Bass, the new U.S. Ambassador to Turkey, visited Anıtkabir and laid a wreath at the tomb of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder and first President of modern Turkey. Ambassador Bass signed the Anıtkabir honor book and wrote:
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s legacy is visible throughout this great nation – in the strength of its society, the dynamism of its economy and in the hearts of a proud independent people.
His teachings remain important to all who work every day to create a world in which everyone may live in peace and dignity.
As the US ambassador, I am honored to pay my respects to the Turkish nation and this great leader as we renew our efforts to build stronger ties of understanding and respect between our peoples.
