The vote today (November 8, 2016) is the 58th U.S. presidential election. U.S. Ambassador to Turkey John Bass is watching the elections with academics, alumni from the YES program, and other invited guests at his residence in Ankara.
The YES (Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study) program is a fully-funded exchange program for high school students aged 15-17, supported by funding from the Department of State. Those who are selected from Turkey each year stay with volunteer families of the United States.
Ambassador Bass spoke about the U.S. electoral system and the importance of fair elections for democracy in his opening remarks. Ambassador Bass joined the young students for several activities and watched the election results together with guests during the evening.
Former congressional staffer William Pierce joined to the election night activities via Skype, answered the questions from the invitees and gave information about the U.S. electoral system.
