Jeffrey M. Hovenier, the new U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires, a.i., visited Anıtkabir and laid a wreath at the tomb of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder and first President of modern Turkey. Chargé d’Affaires Hovenier signed the Anıtkabir honor book and wrote:
Out of deep respect and admiration for the great and distinguished leader of the Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, I’m deeply honored and proud as a representative of the American people to pay my respects to the Turkish Nation and its great leader.
