Chargé d’Affaires Philip S. Kosnett visited detained U.S. citizen and NASA physicist Dr. Serkan Golge in prison on June 20. On February 8, 2018, Dr. Golge was convicted and sentenced to seven and a half years in prison for alleged involvement in terrorism. We have seen no evidence to indicate wrongdoing and remain deeply concerned about Dr. Golge’s conviction. On May 9, Dr. Golge’s attorney filed an appeal of his conviction and sentence. We believe that his release through the appeals process would be just and appropriate. The United States and Turkey have expressed their commitment to resolving issues of mutual concern. We continue to urge Turkish officials to resolve this and other cases of U.S. citizens and Mission Turkey locally employed staff detained on scant evidence under state of emergency provisions and allow them to be reunited with their families as soon as possible.
