Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Demonstrations planned in Beyoglu District in Istanbul

The U.S. Consulate General Istanbul informs U.S. citizens of protest activity planned for the next several days on Istiklal Caddesi in Istanbul, near a number of diplomatic missions in the Beyoglu District. Today, December 10, a demonstration against Russia’s actions in Turkey and Syria will start at approximately 8:00 p.m. outside the Consulate General of Russia. On Sunday, December 13, a demonstration against counter-ISIL actions by France, the United States, and NATO will begin at approximately 2:30 p.m. outside the Consulate General of France.

The U.S. Consulate General reminds U.S. citizens that demonstrations and large events intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational. We advise U.S. citizens to avoid large political gatherings, protests, and demonstrations and to exercise caution if you are in the vicinity. Similar demonstrations have been targets of terrorist activity in the past.

We strongly encourage U.S. citizens to maintain a high level of vigilance, be aware of local events, and take the appropriate steps to bolster your personal security.
