Security Message for U.S. Citizens: “March for Justice” Rally in Maltepe District

On Sunday, July 9th, starting at 5:00 p.m., a political rally to mark the end of the “March for Justice” from Ankara will take place in the vicinity of Dragos Park and the Tuzlaspor stadium in the Maltepe district on the Asian side of Istanbul. Organizers predict a sizeable turnout of over one million people for the event with increased traffic congestion and police presence in the area.  Other unsanctioned, unannounced rallies may occur in other locations of Istanbul as well.

The U.S. Consulate General Istanbul reminds U.S. citizens that terrorists have targeted political rallies in the past, and that demonstrations and large events intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. The U.S. Mission to Turkey urges U.S. citizens traveling or residing in Turkey to exercise caution and avoid demonstrations and large gatherings.  The Mission also urges citizens to develop and review personal security plans, remain aware of surroundings, monitor local news stations for updates, follow instructions from local authorities, and keep loved ones aware of your welfare and whereabouts.
