The U.S. Mission in Türkiye is pleased to share the 2022 Open Doors Report on international and U.S. student mobility, which the U.S. Department of State sponsors every year in collaboration with the Institute of International Education.

Ambassador Jeffry Flake welcomed the report, saying: “Thanks to the breadth and variety of education programs in the United States, any student can find a program that fits his or her needs.  We welcomed the increase in Turkish students in the 2021-22 academic year.  We want more Turkish students to be able to benefit from U.S. education.”

International student mobility is central to diplomacy, innovation, economic prosperity, and national security.  As Secretary Blinken has said, it is a “foreign policy imperative.”

Key Figures from the 2022 Open Doors Report:

  • The United States remains the top destination for international students with over 948,000 international students. The total number of international students enrolled in U.S. institutions is up 4 percent overall.
  • 8,467 Turkish students were enrolled at U.S. institutions in the 2021-22 academic year.
  • The number of Turkish students in the United States rose 4.4 percent over last year, the highest rate of increase in more than a decade.
  • Türkiye remains a top source for international students in the United States, representing the third-highest number of students from Europe and 18th

These figures represent the continuing strong partnership between the United States and Türkiye.  Educational opportunities strengthen people-to-people ties and form a strong foundation for our robust trade relationship.

The U.S. Mission in Türkiye offers a wide array of professional and academic exchange programs which benefit over 150 Turkish citizens each year. This is in addition to the Fulbright Program, our flagship foreign exchange scholarship program.  Our English language programs in Türkiye also provide Turkish students and professionals with the skills they need to succeed at university, access global media, and improve their career opportunities.
