Below are the steps that need to be followed when taking a pet out of Turkey (Izmir region):
Step 1: Check your pet’s shot records. Your pet must have had a rabies vaccination at least 30 days before your departure date (required by U.S. authorities), but not more than one year.
Step 2: Go to your municipality’s veterinarian service to get an approval on the vaccination records.
Step 3: 48 hours before your departure, go to the Izmir Veterinarian Customs Office (Gümrük Veteriner Müdürlüğü – Taasuvhane), İşçiler Cad, No: 139, Alsancak, Izmir (Tel: 4648024) to obtain a “Veterinary Certificate on the Origin and State of Health of Animals.” This health certificate is required by Turkish Customs when departing Turkey and is also used as an International Health Certificate when entering the U.S. or other countries. It is good for 2 days after issue. It is not necessary to make an appointment. Office hours are Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (closed for 12-1:00 p.m. for lunch). You will need to pay 20 YTL for the certificate.
You will need to bring the following with you to the Izmir Veterinarian Customs Office:
- Your pet(s),
- Your pet’s original vaccination card and a copy of the card
The entire process at Izmir Veterinarian Customs should take about 15 minutes. No English is spoken.
